National Indigenous Art Triennial
13th October 2008
Jean Baptiste Apuatimi and Tiwi Design Art Centre were in attendance at the opening of the NGA's Inaugural National Indigenous Art Triennial : Culture Warriors on October 13. We are very proud that Jean has been recognised for her many outstanding qualities as an Aboriginal artist and will be highlighted as one of the "big guns" of the exhibition. See the NGA website: http://www.nga.gov.au/Exhibition/NIAT07/
Jean Baptiste, her daughter Marie Josette Orsto, Margaret Renee Kerinauia, Ita Tipungwuti and Roslyn Orsto were at the huge opening, performing traditional Tiwi dance to celebrate. Whilst in Canberra, Jean provided talks at the NGA about her career as a painter and the significance of her work to Tiwi art and culture. The artists again danced on the Sunday after the opening at the NGA's family day. They made a trip to the National Museum to get a special viewing of the Tiwi Collection.
Here is a photo of Jean with Brenda Croft, the curator of Culture Warriors, standing in front of Jean's work: Yirrikapayi (saltwater crocodile).
