Big Footy weekend on Tiwi Islands

Sunday March 16 was a big day on the Tiwi Islands and our annual Tiwi Art Footy Sale was indeed a success.  We had over 550 people through the doors of Tiwi Design art centre in just 5 hours.  Around $40 000 worth of Tiwi art was sold.  The popular items were the heavily reduced ochre paintings, screen-printed fabric, and the bird carvings.  Most of the visitors flew in from Darwin for the day - to grab a bargain from us in the morning, and then head to the grand final in the afternoon, where a great match was played out between the Imalu tigers and Tapalinga Superstars.  Congratulations to Imalu!

The sale was a project for the Tiwi Art Network and was indeed a large group effort.  Staff and artists from three art centres came together to sell their art in the sweaty and buzzing Tiwi Design.  Getting there was half the work!  With the roads on Melville Island closed due to wet season flooding, Jilamara and Munupi art centres had to juggle the logistics of getting art and people over to Nguiu.  Various charter planes and boats were involved, and even these were subject to the stormy weather.  Hats off to the Jilamara artists who actually walked through the flooded roads on Melville Island to get to the sale!

We were also joined by a small group of dedicated volunteers, so thankyou to Erica, Fran, Al and Amy for your contributions.

New gallery for Tiwi Art

In December 2007, the Tiwi Art Network moved its premises from a dark office in the city to a brighter, cleaner space in leafy Parap, which is fast becoming the new arts hub of Darwin!

Please note our new address:

3/3 Vickers St, Parap NT 0820

or

PO Box 2806, Parap NT 0804

We are excited about the new space as it gives us a chance to have a small gallery of Tiwi art from the three art centres.  We have on offer ochre paintings on paper, paintings on canvas, pottery, ironwood carvings, screen-printed fabric, silver jewellery and silk scarves.

The gallery will be open Wednesdays to Fridays, 10am-5pm and Saturdays, 10am-2pm.

New premises for the Tiwi Art Network

This week, the Tiwi Art Network is holding a moving sale from its premises in the Air Raid Arcade, Darwin CBD.  This is to prepare for our move to a brighter location in Parap - 5 minutes from the centre of Darwin.  Parap is the location of a small shopping village, the popular Saturday markets and several other art galleries, making it an exciting opportunity for Tiwi Art Network.  We will be moving to 3/3 Vickers St Parap on 3rd December. For those of you living in Darwin, we look forward to meeting you in our new space in the near future.

Sale runs from Wed 14 - Sat 17 November, 9.30am-4.30pm

Jilamara Print workshop with Northern Editions

In 2006, Northern Editions visited Milikapiti to conduct an etching workshop with Jilamara artists.  The result was some beautiful works by senior artists which added to Jilamara's portfolio of high-quality printwork.

You can watch the video clip about the workshop (courtesy of Charles Darwin University) here and the prints are available for purchase online at the Jilamara gallery: http://www.jilamara.com/artworksearch.aspx

National Indigenous Art Triennial

Jean Baptiste Apuatimi and Tiwi Design Art Centre were in attendance at the opening of the NGA's Inaugural National Indigenous Art Triennial : Culture Warriors on October 13.  We are very proud that Jean has been recognised for her many outstanding qualities as an Aboriginal artist and will be highlighted as one of the "big guns" of the exhibition.  See the NGA website: http://www.nga.gov.au/Exhibition/NIAT07/

Jean Baptiste, her daughter Marie Josette Orsto, Margaret Renee Kerinauia, Ita Tipungwuti and Roslyn Orsto were at the huge opening, performing traditional Tiwi dance to celebrate.  Whilst in Canberra, Jean provided talks at the NGA about her career as a painter and the significance of her work to Tiwi art and culture.  The artists again danced on the Sunday after the opening at the NGA's family day.  They made a trip to the National Museum to get a special viewing of the Tiwi Collection.

Tiwi Art Network showcases its emerging artists

On Friday 10 August (the morning of the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award), the Tiwi Art Network opened the doors of its annual major Darwin exhibition.  This year, the emerging Tiwi artists were showcased in an impressive collection.  Works by artists such as Marie Josette Orsto, Margaret Renee Kerinauia, Roslyn Orsto, Ita Tipungwuti, Conrad Tipungwuti, Pauletta Kerinauia, Robert Puruntatameri, Janine Puruntatameri and Samuel Poantimului showed that the future looks bright for Tiwi art.  The name of the exhibition was Nga-wuja Arungwapi (we are going forward to the future).  About 140 people attended the breakfast opening with quite a buzz and over $50 000 worth of art was sold in the first 3 hours!  The Tiwi Art Network's 3-year business plan was also launched at the event which was a great achievement of the 4 member organisations (Jilamara, Munupi, Tiwi Design and Tiwi Art Network) working together and moving forward as a collective under the guidance of the Tiwi executive committee.  We would like to thank Anita Angel who officially opened the exhibition with great enthusiasm and dedication.  The exhibition has been a great success!

Opening of Kitty Kantilla Retrospective

On Thursday 26 April, the NGV held an opening function for the Kitty Kantilla Retrospective.  The event was attended by the Indigenous Arts industry, members and friends of the NGV plus a lot of friends of the Tiwi artists and the old lady, Kitty Kantilla.  There to lend support for the Tiwi artists were several past managers of Jilamara, Munupi, Tiwi Design and the Tiwi Art Network.

It was an emotional day for the Tiwi artists, seeing the work of the old lady hanging on display in the gallery, and then paying tribute to her that evening.  The Tiwi dressed in traditional wear to show their dances from country.

The catalogue accompanying the exhibition was also launched at the event.

Tiwi Art Network Business Planning

On April 16 and 17, the Tiwi Art Network held a business planning workshop at Munupi Lodge, Garden Point (Melville Island).  The Tiwi executive members, art centre managers, and TAN Manager all came together for 2 days to talk about the future path for TAN.  With so many opportunities for this unique marketing organisation, we felt that it was time to look at our resources and strengths and streamline the activities that TAN focuses on.  Thanks to Vokili Shiell at ANKAAA, we received funding to pay for a consultant, Sam Togni (from Matrix on Board) to facilitate the business planning process.  Sam came up from Sydney to spend a few days on the island.  She was very impressed with the contributions made by the participants, especially their attendance up until 7.00 in the evening.

Funding provided by the Tiwi Land Council and Arts NT allowed us to use Munupi Lodge as the venue.  This meant we were able to have a quiet area away from the art centres to talk openly as well as socialise.  Not bad, doing a business plan with a view of the Apsley Strait, the odd crocodile, and fresh barra for lunch!  By the end, the executives were asking if we could do it again next year!  Thanks to Sam's leadership, we were all able to exchange information and ideas about the organisation, which was an important outcome for the process.

Preparations for Kitty Kantilla Retrospective

On Tuesday 24 April a crew of artists head down to Melbourne for the grand opening of the Kitty Kantilla Retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria (Ian Potter Centre).  Dymphna Kerinauia, Cabrini Wilson, Marie-Carmel Kerinauia (all relatives of the late Kitty Kantilla), Pedro Wonaeamirri, Patrick Freddy Puruntatameri, Brenda Tipungwuti and Jean Baptiste Apuatimi will be there for the opening events.  As is tradition, Pedro and Patrick will be placing a tunga (basket) on the pukumani pole before the proceedings begin.  Other Tiwi artists are currently involved in making the outfits for the Tiwi to wear when they perform traditional Tiwi dance at the launch event.

This is a very significant exhibition for Jilamara Arts & Crafts, as Kitty Kantilla is still known as the "Queen of Jilamara".  She broke a lot of ground in terms of her style and her success.  So this will be an opportunity to honour this special woman from Melville Island.

The exhibition opens on Friday 27 April.  There will be a floor talk by the artists at 11.30am and a talk by former and current Tiwi art centre managers at 2pm on Friday.

At the same time, another Jilamara exhibition will open in Melbourne : Ngarramukuyiri jilamara kartakuni (painting designs on ironwood) at Alcaston Gallery.  This show will celebrate the precise works of the Jilamara Carvers.

Essendon visits Nguiu

On Thursday 8 Feb, Beverly Knight from Alcaston Gallery in Melbourne visited Tiwi Design art centre with players from the Essendon football team, as part of their culture camp program.  Beverly represents the Tiwi Design potters at her gallery in  Melbourne and has also been the director for the Essendon team for 14 years.  During their visit, Beverly and the Essendon team joined the Tiwi Islanders in celebrating their shared passions of art and football, as Tiwi Design opened their newly refurbished gallery.  The Essendon players then participated in Auskick training with the young Tiwi footballers before watching the local teams, Muluwurri Eagles and Wulama Bulldogs, in an exciting battle that was won by Muluwurri in the closing minutes of the game.  On Friday 9 Feb, Essendon plays the Indigenous Allstars in Darwin.

Reconnecting with Country

Tiwi Design has received a grant from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Board of the Australia Council to maintain knowledge of traditional art and craft practice between generations through artist-run workshops.  The project will run from February to August 2007 and will involve artists and members of the community reconnecting with country through a series of culture camps. Next week, Tiwi Design artists will take senior culture women and men in the community back to their country to exchange and record stories about totemic places created during the Parlinari or creation period. The artists will collect ironwood and bark to begin a series of tunga and carving workshops based on traditional ceremonies and practices from the past. Senior men and women will teach the younger generations how to make tunga, ceremonial armbands and head dress, ceremonial spears and tutini poles and other items connected to ceremony. The artists will consider the meaning of the designs on work from the past to inform their current practice.

Duyfken Print Portfolio

In July last year, Jilamara artists Janice Murray & Pedro Wonaeamirri, spent a week at the Australian Print Workshop in Melbourne.  The purpose of the visit was to create a limited edition of prints commissioned by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.  This commission was to commemorate 400 years of Dutch contact with Australia and to acknowledge the special role of Aboriginal people in these early contacts with the Dutch. The theme of the project was 'first encounters".  The title of the portfolio was named after the first Dutch ship to land in Australia, the Duyfken.

Here are some photos of the Duyfken launch at the Art Gallery of NSW last October.  The launch was attended by the ten Aboriginal artists involved, His Royal Highness Prince Orange and Princess Maxima of the Netherlands, and Niek van Zutphen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
