Darwin Festival Mural Project

The Darwin Festival has partnered with the Tiwi Art Network to commission six Tiwi artists from Munupi Arts & Crafts, Tiwi Design Aboriginal Corporation & Jilamara Arts & Crafts to paint the mural that will form the outside walls to the Lighthouse building for the 2010 Darwin Festival.
The artists chosen to participate in this project are Gordon Pupangamirri, Alan Kerinauia, Jennifer Murray, Andrea Tipungwuti, Natalie Puantulura and Fiona Puruntatameri.
After a trip to Bathurst Island for the Tiwi Art Sale and Football Grand Final in 2009, Darwin Festival staff were inspired by the mural paintings on the boatshed and decided to partner with two Larrakia artists to create the mural for the 2009 lighthouse building.
Given that the original inspiration behind painting the lighthouse walls came from the Tiwi Islands it seems fitting that Tiwi artist work on the 2010 project. The five day workshop to create the mural was held at Tiwi Design Art Centre located at Nguiu on Bathurst Island. The mural represents designs and motifs associated with Tiwi ceremony and culture.
