The exhibition Nyini parlingari purrupakuluwunyi, amintiya kiyi nyingani awarra Jilamara – Looking back, looking forward in our Art will be showcased at Charles Darwin University and will officially open the new art gallery space at the university.
The art works are from a Tiwi Design Keep Culture Strong project which received funding from the Australia Council in 2007. Art works that are in this collection were created during the Australian Council funded project, dated March to August 2007.
The aim of this project was for senior artist’s to pass on their knowledge and traditions of arts and craft practice to the younger generation. This tranference of skills took place in the form of painting, bark, and carving workshops at Nguiu, Bathurst Island.
The official opening of the Charles Darwin University Art Gallery will be opened by His Hon the Administrator of the Northern Territory, Mr Tom Pauling AO QC, with The Hon Gerry McCarthy MLA, Minister for Arts and Museum. Artist’s Jean Baptiste Apuatimi, Maria Josette Orsto, Romolo Tipiloura and Gordon Pupangamirri will attend the opening and perform ceremonial dance.
